The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved three major LPG pipeline projects spanning around 1,800 km across six states, with an estimated investment of nearly Rs 7,000 crore.
The projects, to be developed by state-owned GAIL India, are expected to significantly expand India’s LPG pipeline network and strengthen the country’s fuel supply infrastructure. The authorised LPG pipeline network will grow from around 7,700 km to nearly 9,500 km after the expansion.
1,800-Km LPG Pipeline Network To Come Up At Rs 7,000 Crore
The new pipelines will pass through Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka and Goa.
The expansion is particularly significant as India relies heavily on imported LPG. Large quantities of LPG enter the country through coastal import terminals before being transported to consumption centres. A wider pipeline network is expected to make this movement faster, more reliable and more efficient.
Three Major LPG Pipeline Projects Approved
The three projects approved by PNGRB are:
- 556-km Cherlapally (Telangana)-Nagpur (Maharashtra) LPG pipeline
- 611-km Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh)-Sitarganj (Uttarakhand) LPG pipeline
- 633-km Shikrapur (Maharashtra)-Goa and Hubli (Karnataka) LPG pipeline
Together, these three projects will add approximately 1,800 km to the country’s LPG pipeline infrastructure.
Why Is India Expanding LPG Pipelines?
Transporting LPG through pipelines over long distances is considered safer and more economical than relying on road tankers.
The move also comes amid concerns over the risks associated with transporting LPG by road, particularly following several serious accidents involving LPG tankers. The regulator is therefore pushing for a gradual shift away from road-based LPG transportation wherever pipeline infrastructure can be developed.
The expanded network is expected to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of LPG supply while reducing dependence on road transportation.
