Hyderabad: The Union government has announced plans to develop seven high-speed railway corridors across major Indian cities to improve passenger travel and reduce carbon emissions. The announcement was made by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Union Budget.

Hyderabad Linked to Three Corridors

Hyderabad will be connected to three major cities Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru, under the proposed plan. Other planned high-speed routes include Mumbai–Pune, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi and Varanasi–Siliguri.

The Finance Minister said these corridors are designed to act as growth connectors between cities while promoting an environmentally sustainable transport system.

New Freight Corridor Proposed

Alongside passenger rail projects, the Centre has proposed a new dedicated freight corridor connecting Dankuni in eastern India to Surat in the west. The corridor aims to support greener and faster movement of goods.

Currently, work on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai high-speed rail project is underway. Two dedicated freight corridors, Eastern and Western are already operational across several states.

In separate news, the Union government has announced plans to develop five university townships near major industrial and logistics hubs to strengthen higher education and industry linkages. Presenting the Union Budget 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also said one girls’ hostel will be set up in every district across the country. In addition, the Budget proposes support for the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, Mumbai, to establish content laboratories in 15,000 secondary schools nationwide.
