Jagran Correspondent, Ballia | Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Umashankar Singh died on Wednesday. The MLA from the Rasra Assembly Constituency had been battling cancer for a long time and was undergoing treatment.

Mayawati Praises Singh's Dedication To The Party

BSP chief Mayawati expressed her condolences, saying Singh was a dedicated and honest leader who served people throughout his life.

"The news of the passing away this evening of Shri Uma Shankar Singh, the dedicated, honest, and completely loyal popular MLA from Rasra seat in Ballia, during treatment due to a prolonged illness, is extremely heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to his family and all his well-wishers," the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister wrote on X.

No amount of praise can do justice to his devotion to the party, she said, adding that his entire family is like the party family, and all members of his family treat her with the full respect and honour as they would do to an elder sister.

"During my continuous contact with his son, it was from him that I received the news of his passing this evening. In this hour of grief, the entire party and I stand with his family, and they must not lose courage in any way but rather move forward while facing this situation. May nature grant strength to all of them to bear this sorrow," she added.

CM Yogi Condoles BSP MLA's Death

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath condoled the death of Singh, saying that may Lord Ram grant him eternal peace.

"The passing away of the Hon'ble MLA Shri Umashankar Singh Ji from the Rasra Assembly Constituency of Ballia District is extremely heartbreaking. Humble tribute. I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed soul be granted a place at His divine feet, and that the bereaved family members be bestowed with the strength to bear this immense sorrow," he said in an X post. 

 

Singh, a resident of Khanwar village in the Nagra block, was the only BSP MLA in the UP Assembly. He had been a three-term MLA.

Several reports regarding his health had first surfaced in February 2026. After the news of his death went viral, an atmosphere of mourning prevailed among his supporters and well-wishers in the Rasra and Ballia areas. The news of Singh's death has cast a pall of gloom over the region.
