Punjab: Fresh signs of factionalism within the Punjab Congress surfaced on Saturday in Sangrur, where a section of the audience, believed to be supporters of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, disrupted a party event by raising pro-Channi slogans while state unit president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring was addressing workers.

Slogans, Scuffles Disrupt Punjab Congress Event

The meeting, aimed at strengthening the organisation and preparing for the upcoming elections, was being led by party in-charge Bhupesh Baghel. Warring and several other senior leaders were also present. However, as Warring began addressing the workers, a section of the gathering started raising slogans in Channi's favour.

The situation quickly turned violent. Another video from the venue showed supporters of the two leaders clashing in front of Warring and Baghel, exposing the deepening factional divide within the Punjab Congress.

'We Will Identify Them And Take Action': Baghel, Warring

Following the incident, senior Congress leaders warned of strict action. Speaking to news agency ANI, Baghel said, "...We will identify those (who raised slogans), send them a notice and take action accordingly..."

Warring said, "...We will identify them and check if they were members of the Congress party and expel them if needed."

Back-To-Back Controversies Cloud Punjab Congress Meetings

The disruptions mark the second major embarrassment for the state unit in 24 hours. Just a day earlier, several Congress leaders alleged they had been excluded from a meeting in Fatehgarh Sahib, raising serious concerns over internal coordination.

Baghel's two-day visit was aimed at reviewing the party's organisational strength and planning strategy for the upcoming elections. Instead of projecting unity, the meetings have only highlighted the ongoing power struggle between different factions in the Punjab Congress.

Earlier in the 2022 Punjab Assembly Election, Congress suffered a massive defeat against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), reportedly due to the internal crisis. The grand old party is desperately trying to return to power in the northern state and is putting efforts into solving the internal crisis.
