In a major action, the district administration, reaffirming its commitment to make the district free from child marriage, has registered an FIR against nine people, including a 26-year-old woman, for allegedly marrying a minor boy.

According to available information, during an investigation conducted by the Public Construction Centre, it was found that a 16-year-old minor boy from the Sukhani police station area was allegedly abducted and married to a 26-year-old woman in Jirangachh Panchayat.

The investigation confirmed that the child marriage was carried out in collusion with residents and the named accused. Mujahid Alam, District Project Coordinator of the Public Works Centre, submitted a detailed report on both cases to Aniket Kumar, Sub-Divisional Officer and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer.

During the inquiry, the child’s educational documents, marriage certificate, and other evidence were examined, which established that the boy was legally a minor.

Following the findings, the Sub-Divisional Officer directed the Sukhani police station and Block Development Officer, Thakurganj, to take necessary legal action and register an FIR.

Subsequently, a case was registered at Sukhani Police Station (Case No. 39/26) under relevant sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Police have initiated action against all nine accused, including the woman.

In this regard, Sub-Divisional Officer Aniket Kumar said that child marriage is not only a social evil but also a serious, punishable offence that violates the health, education, and constitutional rights of children.

He further said that under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, those who conduct, assist, or participate in child marriage can face rigorous imprisonment of up to two years along with a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.
