Days after violent clashes erupted between protesting students and the Bihar Police in Patna over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, the Bihar government on Monday announced that it would withdraw all cases registered against students involved in the agitation. The state also assured that no further legal action would be taken against those who participated in the protests.

The announcement follows last week's Bihar Bandh, during which several students were detained and arrested after demonstrations turned violent in parts of the state.

According to the police, some protesters allegedly attacked security personnel, vandalised government vehicles and public property, and assaulted civilians and media personnel using sticks, iron rods, bricks, and stones.

The decision comes in the wake of the month-long protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, which resulted in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday. During negotiations with the Centre, the withdrawal of FIRs against protesters and immunity from further legal action were among the CJP's principal demands, which the government agreed to.

Not only Bihar, multiple FIRs were registered across several states after clashes broke out between protesters and the police following the July 20 'Chalo Sansad' march..

According to an official release issued by the state's Home Department, "The Government of Bihar gives the following assurances in connection with the protests related to the alleged irregularities in NEET/UG examination and the consequent demand for accountability and reforms in the examination and higher education sector:"

"No adverse legal action punitive/retaliatory shall be taken by the Government against any individual participating in the protests before 6 P.M. on 26.07.2026, across the entire state."

Furthermore, all the persons arrested/detained in connections with the cases registered before 6 PM on 26.07.2026, shall be released immediately. All these cases registered before 6 PM on 26.07.2026, по action, directly or indirectly, will be taken against such individuals in future as well.

This comes after the Bihar Police on Monday said altogether 694 people, nearly half of whom minors, were detained for trying to enforce a state-wide bandh last week over the NEET paper leak issue.
