The Bhopal and Indore metro systems have introduced a unique initiative called “Celebration on Wheels”, allowing citizens to host birthday parties, pre-wedding shoots, kitty parties and even film or promotional shoots inside metro coaches and station premises. The move is aimed at boosting ridership as well as generating additional non-fare revenue for the metro networks.

Under the scheme, metro coaches are being converted into rentable event spaces, marking a first-of-its-kind experiment in India’s urban transport sector.

  • Rs 20,000 refundable security deposit per coach

Guest limit and booking rules

  • Maximum 50 people per coach allowed
  • Booking must be made at least 15 days in advance
  • First-come, first-served allocation system
  • Additional guests will need standard metro tickets if applicable

Authorities have imposed strict safety rules:

  • No alcohol or smoking

  • Organisers are responsible for any damage inside the coaches

Officials said the initiative is designed to:

  • Increase low metro ridership in Bhopal and Indore

  • Make metro spaces part of urban lifestyle and celebrations

The concept has already started gaining attention, with reports of early bookings and even birthday celebrations being hosted inside metro coaches, turning public transport into a new-age event destination.

The Bhopal Metro, inaugurated in December 2025, currently runs on a 6.22-km priority corridor with limited stations, while the Indore Metro, launched in May 2025, initially attracted heavy crowds before witnessing a sharp decline in daily ridership.

MPMRCL Managing Director S Krishna Chaitanya said the “Celebration on Wheels” initiative was designed keeping in mind the evolving urban culture of Bhopal and Indore. He added that the metro system should become more integrated into citizens’ everyday lives beyond being just a mode of transport.

The initiative has already witnessed its first celebration onboard, with Indore Metro recently hosting a birthday party inside a decorated metro coach as part of the corporation’s new outreach strategy.
