Bengal Post-Poll Violence: Violence continues to escalate in West Bengal following the results of the assembly election. Large-scale violence broke out in North 24 Parganas district's Sandeshkhali late Tuesday night. Police personnel were attacked while investigating earlier incidents of violence in the Nazat police station area after rival Trinamool Congress (TMC) groups clashed, said police sources cited by jagran.com.

The Station House Officer of Naijat police station and a constable were shot at while tree policemen and two Central Police Force (CAPF) personnel were injured in the attack. The injured were admitted to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata.

The incident occurred in the Rajbari area of the Naijat police station area. Upon receiving information, Naijat Police Station Officer Bharat Prasun Kar arrived at the scene. As per jagran.com, shots were fired from inside a house during which a bullet hit Bharat Prasun in the leg. Officials said police raided the scene, recovered socket bombs, and detained several suspects. Further investigation is underway.

What Did EC Say?

The Election Commission on Tuesday directed Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, DGP Siddhnath Gupta and the Central Armed Police Forces to adopt a “zero-tolerance policy” towards any incident of post-poll violence in the state.

The Election Commission issued this directive after two people were allegedly killed and several party offices were vandalised in separate incidents of violence in the state. The Bengal Chief Secretary said both state officials and central forces have been instructed to remain vigilant and take immediate action in case of any untoward incident. "Close coordination has been emphasised between the administration and the Central Armed Police Forces to ensure that the situation remains under control," he said.
