Bengal Polls: With just a few days remaining in the West Bengal Assembly election, all the leading parties have intensified their campaigns. The contest in the capital city, Kolkata, is likely to be tight between the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC and BJP after the voter deletions following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Election Commission has removed 6,06,563 voters across the Kolkata North and Kolkata South districts, leading to a possible change in the political dynamics.
Earlier in the 2021 assembly election, the gap between the votes received by the ruling party and the BJP across these districts was 6,07,612. Kolkata South includes constituencies like Bhabanipur, Kasba, Behala Purba, Behala Paschim, Kolkata Port, Rashbehari, and Ballygunge. Apart from this, Kolkata North also has high-profile seats, including Kashipur-Belgachhia, Maniktala, Shyampukur, Jorasanko, Beleghata, Entally, and Chowrangee.
"Even in the CM’s constituency, more than 50,000 votes have been deleted. In the 2021 bypoll, when she won from Bhabanipur, the gap between Mamata Banerjee and her rival was less than 50,000. The BJP was also ahead in many wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in the 2024 elections," a senior TMC leader was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
"While our fight in Kolkata is not going to be easy, our party workers are working very hard to reach all the households in Kolkata. We are expecting that our margin of win may decrease, but we will win all the seats in Kolkata," the leader added.

The contest in Bhabanipur between Mamata Banerjee and BJP state chief Suvendu Adhikari is likely to be highly competitive. While the chief minister has retained the seat for the past two times, her former ally has decided to offer a challenge this time. While the polling will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, the results will be announced on May 4.
