Bengal Polls: Amid the ongoing fierce campaign for the West Bengal Assembly election, the constituencies in the Junglemahal region are key for both the ruling TMC and the BJP. Once dominated by the left forces, the tribal region has witnessed significant transition in political inclination in the past few years. With 40 constituencies in the Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Purulia, and Bankura districts, the region is crucial for all the prominent parties. With a significant decline in Naxalism, the priority of the region has changed severely.
Junglemahal Political Trend
- The region was heavily dominated by the left forces before their collapse in 2011; the TMC got the lead for the first time
- Earlier in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP surprised by winning five out of the total six seats
- However, the Mamata Banerjee-led party made a solid comeback by winning 24 of the total 40 constituencies

What To Expect In 2026 Polls?
- The BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Suvendu Adhikari, have accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of disrespecting President Droupadi Murmu during her recent visit to the poll-bound state.
- However, the TMC has alleged that the implementation of the Unifor Civil Code (UCC) will snatch the rights of the local tribal residents
- "Their (BJP) manifesto is filled with lies. Implementing UCC means you will lose the right to practise your religion and faith. It will take away your culture, tradition and education. UCC means destruction of diversity. They want to make everything homogeneous. We will oppose this. UCC is dangerous," CM Banerjee stated in a rally.
