West Bengal Election Results: The counting for the 294 seats in West Bengal is underway, with trends suggesting a huge majority for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While the saffron party is leading on 190 seats, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) is only ahead on around 100 seats. While it is not compulsory that the trend fully converts into the actual result, the TMC is not likely to return to power, that too with a big majority.
5 'M' Factors Behind BJP's Rise
Modi: There are several factors behind the rise of the BJP, including long anti-incumbency, law and order, and corruption. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held several rallies and roadshows during the campaign, highlighting the alleged lawlessness in Bengal under the TMC rule.
Mamata: TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee accused the Election Commission of bias and also alleged that the BJP has deployed the central forces to threaten the voters. However, these narratives could not convince the voters as anti-incumbency took over.
Migrants: While the BJP raised the issue of infiltration, especially in the border districts, Mamata Banerjee stated that the revision process was being conducted to remove the voters of the deprived sections of society.
Matua community: Its population is expected to be around 17 to 18 per cent of the total population of the state. The community has its base mostly in the border districts of Bengal, including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, and Cooch Behar.
Muslims: The Muslim population has always played a decisive role in Bengal and has stood united behind Mamata Banerjee. However, the voter base could have been divided due to the presence of other parties, including AIMIM, Congress, CPI-M, and Humayun Kabir's Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP). Mamata Banerjee has urged the candidates and supporters to not panic and wait for the final results.
