Bengal Election Result: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended the 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal in the recently conducted assembly elections. While the BJP registered victory in 207 of the 294 constituencies, the incumbent party could only manage to get 80 seats. Apart from this, other parties, including Congress, CPI(M), and Humayun Kabir's AJUP, got two seats each. A split in the non-BJP voters has potentially helped the saffron party in the hard-fought election.

As per the data provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the candidate who remained at the third position secured more votes than the winning margin on at least 82 seats, reported the Times of India. The report suggests that the candidates securing the third position on several seats had enough votes to change the results completely.

As per the "spoiler effect", votes get divided when multiple candidates of similar ideology compete against each other. While the TMC could not have formed an alliance with CPM, a possible tie with Congress could have improved its tally.
