Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent India at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh PM-elect Tarique Rahman. The Lok Sabha speaker will be accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to the oath-taking ceremony, which will take place on February 17 in the Bangladesh Parliament, also called Jatiya Sansad. However, PM Modi has declined the invitation due to a prior meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron's visit clashes with the oath-taking ceremony of Rahman, for which PM Modi will be in Mumbai.

Dhaka had officially invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony that will inaugurate Rahman’s tenure after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s emphatic electoral win. Although Modi will not be present, India’s decision to depute senior representatives underscores its intent to maintain active diplomatic engagement.

Dhaka Eyes For Regional Outreach

Besides India, Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, has invited heads of government from 12 more countries to attend the event. The invitee list includes China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan.

India’s invitation is seen as a major bilateral diplomatic reset, as Dhaka and New Delhi look to mend ties following a break in relations over the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in India since 2024.

BNP's Landslide Victory In The Election

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clinched a two-thirds majority in the Jatiya Sangsad in the first parliamentary elections that took place since 2024. Out of 300 seats, the BNP won in 212 seats. The mandate cleared the path for Tarique Rahman, who returned to the country after a two-decade self-imposed exile, where he was in the United Kingdom.

The elections, held under an interim administration, recorded strong voter participation and were broadly regarded as peaceful and competitive. Leaders from several countries, including India, extended congratulations to Rahman. The result signals a major political transition in Dhaka, with potential implications for both domestic governance and regional alignments.
