Assam Polls: The Election Commission informed that Assam registered its highest voter turnout on Thursday with 85.91 per cent with chances of further increase in the final count. As per the data released by the poll body, the turnout is 1.24 per cent higher than the previous record registered in the 2016 Assembly polls. While the ruling BJP claimed that the higher turnout was due to the development works by Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Congress asserted that the people of Assam wanted a change.
As per the poll body's data, 18 out of the total 126 constituencies witnessed voter turnout above 90 per cent. The highest turnout was registered in the Birsing Jarua constituency at 96.54 per cent. Apart from this, several other constituencies, including Chenga, Dalgaon, Gauripur, Jaleshwar, Srijangram, and Mankachar, witnessed voter turnout over 95 per cent, the poll body informed.
Assam: Factors Behind High Turnout
- Special Intensive Revision
- High polarisation, especially among the minority voters
- Competitive voting environment
- Increased women's participation possibly due to the beneficiary schemes
While addressing a press conference on Friday, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia asserted that the locals have shown faith in the current government. He further asserted that the BJP under the leadership of Sarma will get a historic mandate. "We will just say our own sinaki (familiar) people have given more votes this time… Our other people who would earlier hesitate in some way have come forward to vote for a strong government," Saikia was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
However, Congress leader Mira Borthakur Goswami claimed that the higher turnout suggested anti-incumbency, adding that the grand old party will return to power after a decade. "People were in line from 8 am to 5 pm because they want poriborton. The silent votes will come to us because they cannot tolerate the misgovernance under and behaviour of Sarma," Goswami was quoted as saying by the IE.
