The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is preparing to publish a 'comprehensive' interim report on the Air India Ahmedabad crash ahead of the first anniversary of the accident, as the probe into the deadly accident is still underway and the final report may take longer.

The interim report will look into the findings of the probe. According to a report by news agency Reuters, AAIB, the agency overseeing the investigation, is likely to publish the interim report soon, as the final report is unlikely to be prepared in June, around the anniversary of the crash that claimed the lives of 260 individuals and became one of the world's deadliest aviation accidents.

The final report is likely to be released after June, as the "complex nature" of the probe has made it impossible to make the report ready by the anniversary, Reuters cited officials familiar with the matter as saying.

According to international rules, the final report in a plane crash is due within a year of the accident. If the time period needs to be extended, an interim statement is required to be issued on each anniversary.

241 killed in air, 19 on ground

Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight, AI171, crashed shortly after it took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on June 12, 2025.

The visuals from the site showed aircraft started plunging soon after the take off and crashed into a student hostel of Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College. It took just 32 seconds for the flight from takeoff to crash.

Among 242 on board, 241, including all 12 crew, died while only one passenger miraculously escaped.

On the ground, around 19 people were killed while nearly 70 people were injured.

What does preliminary report say?

A month after the fatal crash, the AAIB had released the preliminary report, which noted that the accident had taken place after both engines lost thrust due to their switches moving from RUN to CUTOFF position, three seconds after takeoff.

The report mentioned the recording of the cockpit conversation between the two pilots of the plane, wherein one pilot asked the other why the switch had been moved to CUTOFF. To this, another pilot replied that he had not changed the position.

The switches were returned to the RUN position, following which a mayday call was made by a pilot.
