Lagaan Movie: The legendary Bollywood film Lagaan, released in 2001, remains an unforgettable milestone in Indian cinema. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, the historical sports drama featured a massive ensemble cast, with each artist establishing a unique identity.
Who Is Amin Hajee?
While some stars shined brightly on the silver screen for decades, others found themselves lost in the glitz of the industry. Actor Amin Hajee, who played the highly memorable role of Bagha, the mute temple drummer, recently opened up about his experience 25 years after the film's release.

Speaking to PTI during a special 25-year celebration event for the film, Amin Hajee explained that while working on Lagaan was an incredibly special experience, it unexpectedly created a massive hurdle for his acting career. Amin Hajee stated, "Lagaan set the bar very high for me as an actor. The story of the film was so brilliant that every actor was a hero in his own right. Whatever roles came my way after this, they couldn't even compare to 'Lagaan'. That's why I say that this film ruined me professionally."
Amin Hajee Reflects On How 2001 Lagaan 'Destroyed' His Career
In the 2001 Lagaan, Amin Hajee beautifully portrayed Bagha, a man who could neither speak nor hear, but who became an indispensable part of the village cricket team. To bring this beloved character to life naturally, Amin Hajee spent months meeting families with deaf and mute members, closely studying their facial expressions and communication patterns.
Apart from acting in Lagaan, Amin Hajee successfully channelled his creative talents into other areas of filmmaking. He transitioned into scriptwriting, co-writing critically acclaimed Bollywood epics such as Swades (2004) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008) alongside Ashutosh Gowariker. He also made his official directorial debut in 2021 with the psychological thriller film Koi Jaane Na.
Amin Hajee And Wife Charlotte W Coles's Love Story
Despite its professional challenges, Lagaan served as the ultimate turning point for Amin Hajee's personal life. While shooting the epic film, he met British social anthropologist and producer Charlotte Whitby-Coles, who was part of the British cast. Their on-set friendship quickly blossomed into a lifelong romance.

Amin Hajee and Charlotte later married in a ceremony attended by close friends Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao. They have since built a beautiful life together in India alongside their two daughters, Summer and Sky.
Celebrating the 25th anniversary milestone, Charlotte shared a heartfelt message on social media, writing, "LAGAAN 25 years later! I never imagined this film would change my life the way it did and give me the wonderful gift of my family. Forever grateful. #lagaan25years." Replying to it Amin Hajee added, "Thanks, Lagaan, for your greatest gift."
