The leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, C Joseph Vijay, widely known as Thalapathy Vijay, is facing fresh legal difficulties. A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court calling for a police investigation (FIR) into alleged tax irregularities. These claims date back to his pay for the 2015 fantasy-action film, Puli.
Details Of TVK Chief Vijay's 2015 Tax Case
The legal trouble began after the Income Tax Department carried out raids in September 2015 at several locations linked to the actor. During these searches, officials reportedly found evidence of cash payments that had not been fully declared at the time. According to the legal petition, the producers of Puli paid Vijay in two ways: by cheque Rs 16 crore and in cash Rs 4.93 crore.
The plea alleges that while tax was deducted (TDS) for the cheque, it was ignored for the cash payment. Interestingly, the petition also states that during questioning, Jana Nayagan actor Vijay admitted to receiving the cash. The reports suggest, "He admitted to receiving nearly Rs 5 crore in cash connected to his remuneration for Puli. It is also mentioned that he agreed to pay tax on this amount."
Meanwhile, to settle the matter back then, Vijay reportedly declared an additional income of Rs 15 crore for the 2015-16 financial year to cover the discrepancies. However, the new petition seeks to reopen the matter as a criminal case.

On the other hand, this legal update comes at a very dramatic time for Vijay. His new political party, TVK, has just made a huge impact in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. The party won 108 seats, making it the single-largest group in the 234-member house.
Vijay is currently just 10 seats short of the majority needed to rule alone. He is reportedly in talks to form an alliance with other parties like the DMK or AIADMK. There is even a possibility that he could be sworn in as the Chief Minister on 7th May 2026. However, this legal petition could slow down his political momentum.
