Zamaanat is one of the most famous unreleased films in Indian cinema history. Directed by S. Ramanathan, who previously worked with Amitabh Bachchan on hits like Bombay to Goa and Zanjeer, the project was launched in the mid-1990s.
Despite being fully completed, the legal drama never made it to the big screen.
The Story Behind Amitabh Bachchan’s Shelved Movie Zamaanat
The film centres around Shiv Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan), a brilliant lawyer who retires from his practice after losing his eyesight in a violent incident. He leads a quiet, secluded life until a young woman named Kajol approaches him for help.
Kajol’s lover, Suraj, has been falsely framed for a murder. Touched by the young couple's plight, the visually impaired advocate decides to step back into the courtroom to fight for justice against all odds.

Why Was Zamaanat Shelved?
The main reasons Zamaanat remained stuck in development hell were production delays, distribution problems, and severe financial troubles.
Production Delays: Shooting began in 1996, but the project suffered multiple halts over several years. By the time the film was completed in the mid-2000s, its visual style and narrative format felt outdated.
Financial And Distribution Issues: The production house faced budget constraints, making it difficult to secure buyers or distributors.
Tragic Loss: The final blow came with the passing of director S. Ramanathan in 2013, which permanently stalled all efforts to release the film.
Although promotional hoardings appeared across Mumbai at various points, Zamaanat remains an unreleased chapter in Amitabh Bachchan’s legendary career.
