Everything That Went Wrong With Dharma Productions' Dostana 2 Since 2019

Dostana 2 is a follow-up to the romantic comedy of the same name from 2008. The movie, which starred Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, and Abhishek Bachchan in the key roles, was a box office hit and received praise from the general public. But Dostana 2's journey has been oddly rocky.

Public exits, casting changes, creative conflicts, and frequent restarts have all influenced Dostana 2.

What Happened With Dostana 2?

The journey of Dostana 2 started in 2019, when it was formally announced by Dharma Productions. Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Lakshya were supposed to play the main parts in the sequel, which was supposed to be directed by Collin D'Cunha.

However, Dharma Productions declared in April 2021 that Kartik Aaryan would no longer be a part of the movie. The group had decided to recast the movie and keep 'a dignified silence'.

According to estimates, the filming had already lasted between 20 and 35 days.

In interviews, Janhvi Kapoor also acknowledged that the movie had started filming before the pandemic, but she stated she was unsure of the exact reason for its cancellation.

After that, the movie came to an effective halt.

Dostana 2 Revived With New Cast?

In 2025, the project seemed to acquire new life after a protracted period of stillness. According to reports, Dharma Productions was trying to bring Dostana 2 back to life with a new cast and artistic direction.

According to reports, Kartik Aaryan was replaced as the new male lead by Vikrant Massey. He even declared in public that it was his first movie under Karan Johar's banner.

Pratibha Ranta was allegedly being considered for the female lead role, following Janhvi Kapoor's departure due to scheduling issues and prior obligations.

According to reports in March 2026, Lakshya may possibly think about leaving due to persistent delays and unclear manufacturing schedules.

Dostana 2 Fate Uncertain

The most recent setback happened in June 2026, when it was reported that Advait Chandan had left Dostana 2 after working on the movie for months. Creative differences were cited as the reason.

According to reports, his resignation now compels Dharma Productions to reopen the director hunt, further casting doubt on the project.

When a project is put on hold for years, the craze surrounding the announcement starts to fade away, cast members leave, and creative priorities shift.

Dostana 2 is still in development, although its future is uncertain.
