Sridevi’s English Vinglish is finding a new audience on Netflix, 14 years after its theatrical release. The Gauri Shinde-directed movie reached eighth place on the platform’s Indian trending list in October 2026.
The renewed interest has brought attention to the real-life inspiration for the lead character, Shashi Godbole.
English Vinglish: Why Gauri Shinde Felt She Owed Her Mother an Apology
Behind the gentle and caring homemaker who decided to learn English after years of being taunted and belittled for her language skills, lies a personal and real-life story. Filmmaker Gauri Shinde drew inspiration from her mother, Vaishali Shinde.
Who Was The Real Woman Behind English Vinglish?
In a September 2012 interview with The Indian Express, Shinde explained that her mother was discouraged because she did not know English. Originally from Kolhapur, Vaishali was a homemaker who also built a business selling spices and preparing food masalas.
Shinde recalled that her mother often believed she could have been more successful had she been more proficient in the language.
The director described the film as her way of expressing gratitude and apologising to her mother. “English Vinglish is my way of saying ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’ to my mother,” she told The Indian Express.
In a separate interview with Rediff in October 2012, Shinde made the connection even more explicit: “My mother is the inspiration for English Vinglish. But at the same time, the film is fiction.”

What Is The Story Of English Vinglish
In English Vinglish, the story revolves around Shashi Gidbole. She is a capable woman who runs a small ladoo business while managing her household. But she cannot speak or understand English.
Her inability to speak English becomes a source of embarrassment in front of her family, particularly when she is around people who treat the language as a marker of status.
The film’s emotional turning point is not simply that Shashi learns to communicate in English. It is that she begins to recognise her own worth without needing her family’s approval.
Adil Hussain, Mehdi Nebbou and Priya Anand also featured in the cast, while Amitabh Bachchan made a special appearance.
