A controversy has surfaced in Bollywood as actors Dia Mirza and Bhumi Pednekar voiced differing opinions on the recent NEET protests at Jantar Mantar. Dia Mirza appeared to criticise comments made by Bhumi Pednekar regarding the abusive language directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the student demonstrations.

What Did Bhumi Pednekar Say About The Protests?

Bhumi Pednekar posted a detailed video on Instagram addressing the nature of the protests. Whilst showing support for student concerns, she strongly condemned the harsh tone used against PM Modi during the public gathering.

In her video statement, Bhumi said: “Looking at the videos surfacing now, the kind of language being used, and the way the youth of our country are speaking, the youth of our country… this isn’t how we talk, man. We are talking about someone who holds the highest office in the land today."

She further added, “Would we ever speak like this to the elders in our own homes? Can we really resort to using abusive language?"

Bhumi also commented on the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, expressing hope for system improvements. She stated: “May this only make our India stronger and fairer. Today is a monumental moment for our democracy. Citizens that didn’t give up and leadership that listened. The youth spoke, their conviction, their courage, and their belief in the power of change were inspiring."

She concluded by saying, “There was so much said on that stage, but only the voice of what the students rightly wanted echoed through. To me, accountability is about delivering real, solution-driven change. Identifying the cracks and filling them. True reform that actually impacts the future discourse of our students. I think for every Indian, whether you are in public office or are an ordinary citizen, the nation, its prosperity, its people, and its security should always come first. Jai Hind."

How Did Dia Mirza Respond?

Responding to online criticism directed at Bhumi, Dia Mirza indicated her agreement with the critics, warning against missing the core issues of the protest.

Reacting publicly, Dia Mirza wrote,  “The last thing we should be doing is feeding into deflection. I hope every actor making the time to speak about language would equally and emphatically question police brutality, women and girls being doxxed and harassed online whenever we express dissent. Illegal FIRs against underage girls are not going to improve our culture."

Actor Saba Azad also showed support for the post criticising Bhumi Pednekar by dropping a fire emoji in the comments.
