Fifteen years after The Dirty Picture made Vidya Balan’s portrayal of Silk Smitha one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable performances, producer Ekta Kapoor is planning a sequel.
But will the National Award-winning actress return? In an exclusive conversation with Jagran, Vidya has finally addressed the possibility.
Will Vidya Balan Return In The Dirty Picture 2?
Vidya has not confirmed her return to The Dirty Picture 2. In her conversation with Jagran, the actress was asked whether she would be part of the sequel following Ekta Kapoor’s announcement. Her response was candid, with a touch of humour.
“Ab Silk ko jeevit kaise karein,” Vidya said, questioning how Silk could be brought back to life. She added that she did not know what Ektaa was planning.
She said, “I really don't know what Ekta is planning. It's been 15 years, and hopefully, Ekta has found a good story.”
Answering the question if she has been approached by the filmmaker, Vidya added, “I'm in Chennai right now, and someone sent me an article saying Ekta is coming up with The Dirty Picture 2. That's where I found out, and to be honest, I was really excited. If something like this is happening, it's a really good thing.”
Her comments stop short of confirming or rejecting an offer.

Is Ekta Kapoor Making The Dirty Picture 2?
Ekta confirmed the sequel to The Dirty Picture during a conversation on Ranveer Allahbadia's podcast. She said she had been considering the project for some time but was now moving ahead because she had found a story she wanted to tell.
“One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell,” she said.
Ekta also explained how she viewed the original film's central character. Rather than seeing Silk Smitha as a victim, she considered her a woman who celebrated her sexuality despite being judged for it.
“The Dirty Picture was about Silk Smitha. It was about a woman who was condemned for standing up against her sexuality,” Ekta said, adding that sexuality is now understood as a matter of choice.
The producer indicated that the sequel, like its predecessor, would centre on one person's story. However, she has not disclosed the identity of the central character, the cast, or a release date.
It is therefore too early to say whether the film will revisit Silk Smitha's life or explore another woman's journey.

What Was The Dirty Picture About, And Why Was Vidya Balan's Role So Significant?
Released in 2011, The Dirty Picture was a drama inspired by the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha.
Directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the film explored the rise and fall of a woman who became a screen sensation by embracing her sexuality in a male-dominated film industry.
