  1. Karnataka introduces Vidyarthi Sahayahasta Scheme for rural government school students.
  2. Provides 7.5% sub-reservation in engineering and medical admissions.
  3. Eligibility: Class 1-10 continuous schooling in rural government schools.

Karnataka Quota Restructuring: During the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar formally introduced the ambitious Vidyarthi Sahayahasta Scheme. Framed under the overarching vision titled "Your Era: A New Era," the initiative seeks to broaden

access to higher education for students coming from underserved backgrounds. The policy targets structural disparities, ensuring that youth educated in rural regions gain a fairer opportunity to secure competitive seats across professional degree programs throughout the state.

The primary objective of this scheme is to streamline admission pathways into professional higher education, including sought-after streams like engineering, technology, and medical sciences. By reducing systemic barriers for candidates from non-urban sectors, the state government aims to build an inclusive academic ecosystem.

The announcement highlights a broader commitment to helping local students cultivate skills capable of matching both national standards and global employment demands.

Key Features of the Vidyarthi Sahayahasta Reservation

The scheme restructures the existing 15 per cent rural quota framework by carving out a targeted 7.5 per cent sub-reservation exclusively for qualifying candidates.

This dedicated quota directly applies to admissions in professional degree programs like MBBS, BDS, and B.Tech. By prioritising candidates from government-managed institutions, the policy addresses long-standing admission gaps between urban private school graduates and rural state school students.

Eligibility Criteria for Prospective Applicants

To qualify under the Vidyarthi Sahayahasta provisions, candidates must have completed their continuous schooling from Class 1 through Class 10 within a government school situated in a designated rural area.

The targeted eligibility framework aims to support rural students who face severe socio-economic challenges, geographical limitations, and resource constraints while attempting to pursue professional higher education.

Implementation Timeline and Departmental Guidelines

While the policy framework was introduced by the Chief Minister, comprehensive procedural guidelines regarding document verification, application forms, and reservation mapping are currently under preparation.

The Karnataka Education Department is anticipated to issue a detailed notification soon. Students and parents are advised to monitor official government communications for clarity on implementation dates and seat allotment rules.

Broader Digital and Educational Reforms in Karnataka

The Vidyarthi Sahayahasta Scheme complements a wider series of progressive educational reforms recently launched across Karnataka to modernize school curricula. Along with reservation policies, the state is introducing artificial intelligence coursework starting from Class 6 and establishing free Coding Gurukul modules.

These combined efforts focus on equipping rural and government school students with cutting-edge technical capabilities.
