Tamil Nadu New Textbooks: Tamil Nadu School Education Minister A. Rajmohan on Monday released nine newly designed textbooks for students of Classes 1, 2, and 3, marking a significant step under the state's revised curriculum framework. The books, initiated during the previous DMK regime, are crafted to simplify learning, sharpen comprehension, and encourage independent thinking among young learners in their foundational years.

Following the release, Minister Rajmohan chaired a high-level departmental review meeting where he confirmed that all government, government-aided and private schools will reopen on June 1, 2026, after summer vacation.

He announced that the new textbooks have already been dispatched to all districts and the complete set of free welfare materials,  including notebooks and school bags for the 2026–27 academic year, will be distributed to students on the very day schools reopen.

Child-centric design for Classes 1, 2 And 3:

The textbooks for Classes 1, 2 and 3 have been developed with a strong focus on child-centric learning. To keep young students engaged, the books incorporate stories, songs, poems and interactive activities that appeal naturally to early learners.

Officials said the design approach is intended to foster unique individual talents and ensure students achieve the defined learning outcomes for each grade. The books are also printed in vibrant colour layouts that make them visually appealing and accessible to children at the primary level.

Holistic skill-building is built into the Class 1–3 curriculum:

Beyond academics, the new textbooks for Classes 1, 2 and 3 are designed to nurture the all-round development of students. The curriculum content covers motor skills, socio-emotional skills, core values, and life skills,  all woven into the subject matter in age-appropriate ways.

By embedding these elements into everyday lessons, the state aims to prepare young children not just for higher classes but for broader personal growth. Classroom participation and experiential learning have been given priority across all three grades.

Policy outlook and June 1 school reopening:

Minister Rajmohan also used the occasion to address broader policy matters. He reaffirmed that the two-language policy remains a key priority for the state government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. On the PM-SHRI scheme, he said discussions are still ongoing and a final decision will be taken after a thorough evaluation of its benefits and challenges.

With textbooks for Classes 1 to 3 already dispatched to all districts, the government is on track to ensure a smooth and fully equipped reopening for students across Tamil Nadu on June 1.
