'Dream of Wearing Olive-Green Uniform': For the first time in history, Stanzin Tsangyang from the Zanskar district of Ladakh has become the first officer from the region to be commissioned into the Indian Army. Despite coming from a family with no history of military service, she stood tall on the parade ground of the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, a groundbreaking achievement for her community.
On September 5, 2026, Tsangyang made history as the first female officer from the Kargil district, proving that dreams nurtured in the country's most remote regions can reach the greatest heights.
Early Life and Education:
Raised amidst the high mountains and biting cold of Zanskar, Tsangyang learned resilience and determination at a young age. She left home early in pursuit of a "good education and a better future." She spent nearly fourteen years in the hostel of Lamdon Model School in Leh and later secured a scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam.
Journey to the Army:
Her journey toward the Indian Army began when she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during college, where she first learned about the pathways to becoming an army officer. With no military background in her family or community, the Army Training Command viewed her dream of wearing the uniform as "unprecedented," yet her immense willpower to serve the nation drove her forward.

The Army Training Command described her journey as one filled with hardships, challenges, sacrifices, and moments of doubt-a journey she completed with the unwavering support of her parents and the inner strength drawn from her mountain home.
