The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has said that no disciplinary action was initiated against second-year MSc student Sahil Wakode after he was found using a mobile phone during an examination. The student was later found dead in his hostel room on the institute's Powai campus.

According to IIT Bombay, Wakode had uploaded the examination question paper on an AI platform to seek answers. The institute said the examination instructor and Head of Department discussed the matter with him, after which he was counselled.

IIT Bombay Student Death: What Did The Institute Say?

IIT Bombay said it was deeply saddened by the student's death and was extending support to his family, friends, classmates, faculty members and others affected by the incident.

The institute also said that the circumstances surrounding the death were being examined by the appropriate authorities.

Student Was Found Using Mobile Phone During Exam

According to the institute's statement, Wakode was found using a mobile phone during the examination. IIT Bombay said he had uploaded the examination question paper on ChatGPT to seek answers.

The matter was subsequently discussed with the student by the examination instructor and the Head of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering.

IIT Bombay Says No Disciplinary Action Was Initiated

 

The institute said it did not initiate any disciplinary action against the student after the examination incident.

IIT Bombay further stated that the student was counselled and assured that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career. He then returned to his hostel room.

Student Found Dead In Hostel Room

Wakode, an MSc second-year student in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was later found dead in his hostel room on Friday evening.

The institute said the circumstances surrounding the death were being looked into by the appropriate authorities. The statement did not establish that the examination incident caused the student's death.

Case Registered On Father's Complaint

According to reports, a case has been registered following a complaint filed by the student's father. Wakode's mother has also alleged that her son faced harassment and sought justice.

The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation. The authorities' findings will be important in establishing the circumstances surrounding the student's death.
