71-Year-Old Medical Aspirant: A remarkable story of determination and lifelong ambition emerged from Lucknow as 71-year-old Ashok Bahar appeared for the NEET 2026 examination. Despite his age, Bahar’s resolve to pursue a medical career remains stronger than ever.
For Bahar, the attempt is not merely about clearing an entrance exam but about honoring a promise to his mother, who always wished to see him become a doctor. His journey has now become an inspiring example of perseverance and dedication.

A Dream Rooted in Family Inspiration
Bahar shared that speaking to the media said, "My mother always wanted me to become a doctor, just like my father, who was a respected physician in Lucknow." The desire to live up to that expectation stayed with him for decades.
Interestingly, his wife, Dr. Manju Bahar, played a crucial role in reviving his passion for medicine. An accomplished gynecologist, she encouraged him to attempt the medical entrance exam again. Her support and guidance helped him reconnect with the medical field after many years.
Growing up in a family surrounded by healthcare professionals also influenced Bahar deeply. With nearly 20 doctors in his extended family, including several practicing abroad, the environment kept his medical aspirations alive even when earlier attempts did not succeed.
A Career Before Returning to the Dream
Before deciding to pursue medicine again, Bahar built a successful professional career. He served as the marketing head for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand at Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
After taking voluntary retirement, he continued working as a consultant with the Ministry of External Affairs. However, the dream of becoming a doctor never faded from his mind.
Determined to Serve Through Medicine
Now at 71, Bahar hopes to specialise in hepatology, focusing on liver-related diseases. He believes conditions such as fatty liver disease are becoming increasingly common and require greater medical attention.
His story highlights that ambition has no age limit. By appearing for NEET once again, Bahar has shown that passion, determination, and the courage to pursue one’s dreams can inspire people of every generation.
