The new academic session has already started in schools across the country, but many students and teachers are still waiting for the new Class 9 Social Science textbook. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has acknowledged that the book is yet to be printed and distributed, raising concerns among educators and parents.
In a post shared on its official X account, NCERT said it is ensuring adequate supply of new textbooks through its vendor network, sales counters, online portal and Strategic Distribution Centres in collaboration with the Central Warehousing Corporation. The council also stated that the Class 9 Social Science textbook is almost print-ready and will be made available soon.

Even as the new academic session has commenced across the country, students and teachers are awaiting the revised Class 9 Social Science textbook. NCERT has admitted the delay and attributed it to the transition to the new curriculum under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which required extensive content development and phased publication of textbooks.
Over 90 Lakh Class 9 Textbooks Already Published
According to NCERT, more than 90 lakh Class 9 textbooks covering nine subjects have already been printed and distributed across the country. However, the Social Science textbook remains unavailable and is expected to be released shortly.
NEP 2020 Curriculum Transition Behind Delay
NCERT said the rollout of the new curriculum based on NEP 2020 is being carried out in a graded manner. The transition has led to temporary localised shortages and delays in the publication of some books, including the Social Science textbook.
Schools Face Challenges in Academic Planning
With the new academic year already underway, many schools have started teaching under the revised curriculum. However, teachers are relying on limited resources and alternative materials as the absence of the Social Science textbook has complicated lesson planning, assessments and preparation of annual academic calendars.
NCERT Assures Adequate Supply Across the Country
The council said textbook distribution is being carried out through its sales counters, official online portal, e-commerce platforms and newly established Strategic Distribution Centres. NCERT has assured that supplies are being continuously increased to ensure the availability of textbooks across the country.
