May 2026 Calendar: As India grapples with a punishing heatwave in late April and early May 2026, state governments are prioritizing student safety by announcing summer vacation schedules. With temperatures expected to hit 44°C in regions like Delhi, the traditional academic calendar is being adjusted. While standard holidays like Labour Day (May 1) and Eid al-Adha (May 27) remain on the schedule, the primary driver for school closures this month is the extreme weather, with some states like Odisha having already shuttered doors as early as April 27.
The Heatwave Crisis and School Response
The transition into May 2026 has brought with it a severe climate challenge. Intense heatwaves and scorching winds have made the daily commute to educational institutions a health hazard. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued various alerts, including a yellow alert for the national capital, warning of rising mercury levels that can cause heatstroke and dehydration.
For many students, the walk to school has become nearly impossible as ground temperatures reach levels where even momentary contact feels unbearable. Consequently, the educational landscape for the month of May is shifting from classroom learning to a necessary period of indoor safety and rest.
State-Wise Summer Vacation Breakdown
Authorities across different regions have tailored their schedules based on the intensity of the local climate. While Delhi is sticking to its mid-May plan for now, other states have been more proactive.
State / Region | Vacation Start Date | Reopening Date |
Odisha | April 27, 2026 | To be announced |
Delhi | May 11, 2026 | July 1, 2026 |
Rajasthan | May 17, 2026 | June 20, 2026 |
General (India) | Mid-May onwards | Late June / Early July |
Official Holidays and Weekend Breaks:
Beyond the weather-induced closures, May 2026 features several gazetted holidays and standard weekend breaks that apply to schools and colleges. These dates provide a reprieve even for institutions that may not yet have started their full summer break.
Labour Day: May 1 (Friday)
Eid al-Adha (Bakrid): May 27 (Wednesday)
Sundays: May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31
Saturdays: Second (May 9) and Fourth (May 23) Saturdays are generally observed as holidays in many schools.
Health Advisories for the Break:
Given that temperatures are soaring toward 44°C, parents and students are advised to stay indoors during peak sunlight hours (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM). The current "Yellow Alert" status in the capital suggests that while the situation is manageable, it requires constant monitoring. School authorities emphasise that the reopening dates in July remain subject to weather conditions, as the safety of the student population remains the top priority during this extreme 2026 summer season.
