  1. Marathi compulsory for Classes 1-10 in all Maharashtra schools.
  2. Strict action against non-compliant schools for Marathi instruction.
  3. Shivaji Maharaj's history expanded to 22 pages in school books.

The Maharashtra government has decided to make Marathi language instruction compulsory in all schools from Classes 1 to 10. Announcing the decision on Monday, State Education Minister Dada Bhuse said the government is fully committed to the preservation, promotion, and development of the Marathi language. He also warned that strict action will be taken against schools and officials who fail to comply with the order.

Marathi Mandatory From Classes 1 to 10

During the monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly, the minister said that all schools affiliated with the board have been directed to include Marathi as a compulsory subject. BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar raised this issue in the house and complained that most schools are not following the mandate to teach Marathi.

Similar views were expressed by other MLAs who complained about the inadequate implementation of existing rules and penalties. Dada Bhuse, however, assured that a special inspection drive will soon be launched by the government to evaluate the teaching of the Marathi language in schools. Appropriate action will be initiated against any institution violating the norms.

Shivaji Maharaj's History Expanded in School Textbooks

The Education Minister also informed that the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has been covered in more detail in school books than before.

According to the minister, while earlier the books of other education boards had only one and a half columns of information on Shivaji Maharaj, now after the approval of the Central Government, it has been increased to 22 pages, so that the students can understand his life, struggle and contribution better.

The decision comes at a time when CBSE is also moving towards implementing the three-language formula across the country in a phased manner under the National Education Policy.
