Delhi School EV Policy 2026: Schools across the national capital have started planning a gradual transition of their transport fleets to electric vehicles in line with the Delhi government's EV Policy 2026. While some institutions are ready to ask transport contractors to induct electric buses, others are assessing operational feasibility before implementing the change.

Calling the move a positive step towards cleaner and greener transport, Meenakshi Kushwaha, Principal of Birla Vidya Niketan, said that the school currently operates buses through contractors and will ask them to replace existing vehicles with electric buses once the policy is officially notified.

Policy Sets Phased Targets for Electric Bus Adoption

The Delhi EV Policy 2026 proposes that schools ensure at least 10 per cent of their bus fleets transition to electric vehicles within two years of the policy notification. The target will increase to 20 per cent by the end of the third year and reach 30 per cent by March 31, 2030.

The mandate covers the entire school transport fleet, including owned, leased and hired buses. The Education Department will oversee implementation by issuing directions to schools, integrating compliance into recognition and affiliation processes, and coordinating with the Transport Department.

Schools Assess Operational Feasibility

Mallika Preman, Principal of Tagore International School, East of Kailash, said the school currently operates CNG buses and is reviewing the policy's requirements before making any transition. She added that the existing fleet would continue to operate until government notifications and operational considerations are finalised.

Similarly, representatives from Sovereign School, Rohini, and Venkateshwar Global School, Rohini, said they support the initiative and would adopt electric buses gradually in accordance with the timelines prescribed under the policy while ensuring uninterrupted transport services for students.

Policy Encourages Environmental Awareness Among Students

Apart from electrifying school transport, the policy also proposes regular awareness campaigns in schools on air pollution, its impact on health and the environment, and the measures being taken to improve Delhi's air quality.

The policy further encourages student-led initiatives promoting sustainable travel, energy conservation and environmentally responsible behaviour, aiming to build environmental consciousness among young citizens.
