Delhi Chief Minister and Chairperson of the State Names Authority (SNA), Rekha Gupta, has approved the renaming of two upcoming Metro stations and modification of seven others, while retaining the originally proposed names of 12 stations, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.
The CM reviewed 21 station names proposed in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. The revisions were made to ensure that station names better reflect local identity and provide clearer geographical references for commuters.
The two stations that have been completely renamed are Haiderpur Village (earlier North Pitampura) and Madhuban Chowk (earlier Pitampura). Officials said the changes were made to align the names more closely with commonly recognised local references.
“Metro stations are not merely points of transit, but also reflect the identity and cultural significance of the areas they serve. Therefore, each name was finalised only after careful and considered deliberation,” the CM said.
Of the 21 names reviewed, the Authority retained 12 as originally proposed, modified seven, and fully renamed two after detailed examination.
The SNA Chairperson stated that several key factors were taken into consideration while revising the station names. These included the local identity of the area, its historical, social and cultural significance, and recommendations received from local public representatives and citizens.
The Chief Minister said composite names incorporating nearby prominent areas were approved in certain cases to improve passenger navigation and reduce confusion.
Stations whose names have been retained include Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali and Maujpur-Babarpur.
Among the modified names are Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Nanak Pyau-Derawal Nagar, Khanpur-Vayusenabad, Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar, Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (earlier Mayur Vihar Pocket-1), and Mangolpur Kalan-West Enclave.
The State Names Authority stated that future proposals for station name changes would also be considered if they are in public interest and follow prescribed guidelines.
