A major robbery was reported early Friday morning in the high-security Connaught Place area of the national capital.
According to police, four masked men entered Karigari restaurant located in Scindia House around 4 AM, broke open a locker and decamped with over Rs 6.67 lakh in cash along with three mobile phones. A case has been registered at Barakhamba Road Police Station and efforts are underway to trace the accused.
Police said Ramesh Shukla, the restaurant’s maintenance in-charge, was present inside the premises at the time of the incident. He told investigators that he heard a loud noise at around 4 AM and rushed downstairs, where he found four masked men standing near the cash counter armed with knives. When he raised an alarm, the accused fled the spot by scaling a wall.
Initial investigation revealed that the locker had been broken open and Rs 6.67 lakh in cash was stolen. The miscreants also took away two mobile phones belonging to the restaurant and one phone belonging to the security guard.
Authorities are examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify and track down the suspects.
The robbery took place despite heightened security arrangements across the Lutyens’ Zone due to the ongoing AI Summit. Police are probing how the accused managed to execute the crime and escape from the high-security area.
