Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans have some encouraging news as MS Dhoni looks close to getting back to full fitness ahead of the big IPL clash with Mumbai Indians. During a practice session at Wankhede Stadium on April 21, Dhoni was seen keeping wickets for around 40 minutes. After that, he spent nearly an hour batting in the nets, which is a strong sign that he is feeling better physically.

He kept wickets to Sarfaraz Khan and Urvil Patel during the session. With Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the rest of the tournament, Urvil could get a chance in the playing XI. It is still unclear whether Sarfaraz will move up the order and bat at number three.

Dhoni also faced CSK bowlers before doing throwdowns. While he had done throwdowns earlier, this was the first time he batted for such a long period, which suggests clear progress.

So far, Dhoni has missed six matches this season. CSK are currently eighth on the points table and have a negative net run rate. Their next match is against Mumbai Indians, who have also lost four out of six games but are slightly ahead thanks to a big 99-run win over Gujarat Titans on April 20.

In their last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK struggled to finish the chase. Matthew Short batted too slowly, which left too much work for Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton at the end. If Dhoni can return and play short but impactful innings, it could make a big difference for the team.

Will Jacks likely to feature in MI vs CSK clash

Mumbai Indians have also received a boost, with England’s Will Jacks joining the squad. He is expected to be available for the match against CSK on April 23 after missing the first six games due to personal reasons.

Jacks could help strengthen Mumbai’s lineup in more than one way. If Rohit Sharma is unavailable, he might open the innings with Quinton de Kock. He can also bat in the middle order, as he showed during the T20 World Cup 2026. Along with his batting, his bowling has been impressive too.
