Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been in the headlines ever since the start of IPL 2026, and the teenage sensation has more than lived up to the hype. He finished the season with the Orange Cap after amassing 776 runs and rewrote several records along the way.
His exploits have also earned him a place in India’s senior squad, with his highly anticipated debut set to come next month when the Men in Blue take on Ireland during their UK tour.
However, just weeks before his maiden international appearance, Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of an unwanted controversy following an on-field confrontation with a Sri Lankan player during India A’s Tri-Series clash against Sri Lanka A.
The incident unfolded after India’s Super Over defeat on Monday. As Sooryavanshi was walking back to the pavilion alongside teammate Suryansh Shedge, Sri Lankan player Vishen Halambage exchanged words with the youngster. The verbal sparring quickly escalated, with the two players briefly shoving each other before teammates stepped in to separate them.
The altercation sparked speculation over whether the BCCI would take disciplinary action against Sooryavanshi, particularly given the ICC’s strict stance on inappropriate physical contact during matches.
However, the board is not considering any action against the teenager. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the possibility of disciplinary proceedings and said the focus remains on the tournament.
“We want our players to remain focused on the tournament. They should not be distracted by any other issues,” Saikia told Sportstar.
What the ICC Code Says
Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct deals with inappropriate physical contact involving players, support staff, umpires, match referees or any other individual during an international match.
According to the regulation, any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited. Players can be found in breach of the code if they deliberately, recklessly or carelessly collide with, push, or make improper physical contact with another player or an umpire.
