New Zealand cricket icon Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing the curtain down on one of the most decorated careers in the history of the sport.

The 35-year-old, widely regarded as New Zealand’s greatest-ever batter, confirmed his decision after representing the BLACKCAPS for 16 remarkable years. Williamson leaves the international stage as the country’s all-time leading run-scorer across formats, hitting a spectacular 19,346 runs in 378 appearances.

In an emotional statement, Williamson revealed that the decision had been on his mind for some time before finally concluding that the moment had arrived.

“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time,” Williamson said.

“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms,” he added.

End of an Era for New Zealand Cricket

Williamson’s retirement marks the end of a golden chapter in New Zealand cricket. Since making his international debut in 2010, the flamboyant right-hander has evolved into the face of the BLACKCAPS as a prominent player

His bright career includes 48 international centuries and six double-centuries, while his 9,515 Test runs and 33 Test hundreds remain national records. Across formats, Williamson established himself as one of the finest batters of his generation and earned admiration from teammates, opponents, and fans worldwide.

The batting maestro had already stepped away from T20 Internationals in November, and his latest announcement confirms a complete farewell to international cricket.

Captain Who Led a Golden Generation

Beyond his batting capabilities, Williamson's leadership transformed New Zealand into a global powerhouse. Between 2016 and 2024, he captained the Kiwis across all three formats, guiding the side through its most successful era.

Under his captaincy, New Zealand reached the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup final, the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup final, and multiple ICC semi-finals. The crowning achievement came in 2021 when Williamson led the team to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship, securing New Zealand’s first major ICC global title.

His captaincy record included 22 Test victories, 46 ODI wins, and 39 T20I triumphs, cementing his place among the country's most successful leaders.

“Anyone who’s had the privilege of working with Kane understands he is a very special player and person,” BLACKCAPS head coach Rob Walter said.
“His numbers and batting skills speak for themselves, but it’s what he means to this BLACKCAPS team, as well as world cricket, that will be his legacy. His impact on the culture and standards of this team will remain embedded in its DNA,” he added.

Kane Williamson Records

Williamson’s retirement leaves behind an impressive list of achievements. He finishes as New Zealand’s record-holder for most international runs, most international centuries, most Test runs, and most Test hundreds.

Among his many accolades are the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2015, ICC Test Player of the Year in 2019, the 2019 Cricket World Cup Player of the Tournament honour, and a record four Sir Richard Hadlee Medals.

He also became the fastest and youngest player to score centuries against all major Test-playing nations and famously marked his Test debut with a century against India in Ahmedabad in 2010.

What’s Next for Williamson

Williamson’s retirement means he will take no further part in New Zealand’s ongoing Test series in England, with a replacement expected to be named soon.

As one of the game's most respected figures walks away, the numbers tell a remarkable story. But perhaps Williamson’s greatest legacy lies in the standards he set and the inspiration he provided to a generation of cricketers around the world.
