Mumbai Indians Playoff Scenario: Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions are currently in deep trouble in the 19th edition of the tournament after suffering a humiliating eight-wicket defeat against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With that loss, Mumbai stayed in ninth place on the table with only four points and a net run rate of -0.803.

The Hardik Pandya-led side won just two out of nine matches so far, and in total, they have lost seven of their last eight games.

In their last outing against CSK, Mumbai chose to bat first but could only score 159 for 7. Naman Dhir was their top scorer with 57 runs, hitting four boundaries and three sixes. He was lucky, though, as he was dropped early in his innings.

While chasing, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma both scored half-centuries, helping Chennai reach the target comfortably with 11 balls left. Mumbai will now face LSG In their upcoming outing on May 4 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Can Mumbai Indians still qualify?

It’s still possible for Mumbai to reach the playoffs, but it will be very difficult. Their chances are no longer in their control. Even if they win all their remaining matches, they might still not qualify. If they end with 14 points, they will depend on other teams losing and also need a strong net run rate.

This is the sixth IPL season with 10 teams. In such seasons, only once has a team qualified with 14 points, which happened in 2024 when Royal Challengers Bengaluru made it through on net run rate ahead of Chennai.

What Mumbai Indians need to do?

Matches left: 5
Current points: 4
To reach 14 points: Win all 5 matches.
