MI vs CSK, IPL 2026: Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have found themselves at the centre of a controversy during their clash against Chennai Super Kings on Thursday, facing serious allegations of misusing the concussion substitute rule. The incident occurred when all-rounder Mitchell Santner was injured while attempting a catch off Jasprit Bumrah's delivery to Kartik Sharma. Santner appeared to hurt his shoulder and had to be taken off the field.
Mumbai Indians subsequently made a formal request to replace Santner with Shardul Thakur as a concussion substitute, a request that was approved by the match officials. The move quickly sparked debate, raising two key questions: whether the Mumbai Indians misused the concussion substitute rule, and whether Shardul Thakur qualified as a like-for-like replacement for Santner.
As per IPL playing conditions aligned with International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, a concussion substitute is permitted only when a player suffers a head or neck injury. The severity is assessed medically, and the final approval rests with the match referee. In Santner's case, the injury appeared to be to his shoulder. However, the substitution request was reportedly made citing neurological symptoms, which led to further scrutiny.

What Do ICC Rules Say?
According to ICC guidelines, a concussion substitute can be used under the following circumstances:
- When a concussion is confirmed or even suspected
- After on-field or off-field medical assessment
- At any point, if symptoms arise, even after the player has received treatment and returned to play
Interestingly, Santner was later seen in the dressing room applying ice to his shoulder, which added to the doubts surrounding the nature of his injury.

MI Coach Mahela Jayawardene Reacts To Controversy
Addressing the controversy, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene clarified the situation during the post-match press conference. He stated that Santner had sustained injuries to both his neck and shoulder while taking the catch. He further said that the team management had requested a concussion substitute based on these concerns, and the match referee subsequently approved Thakur as Santner's replacement.
"He hit his head first, neck, obviously the shoulder as well. He went for a scan because once he got back, he felt dizziness," Jayawardene said, adding "the ice (pack in the dugout) was there for the shoulder. But he felt that he wasn't stable so we took him for a scan."
No Impact on MI vs CSK Result
Despite the controversy, the substitution had little impact on the outcome of the match. Mumbai Indians went on to suffer their biggest-ever defeat by runs against Chennai Super Kings in IPL history, losing by a massive 103-run margin.
