IPL 2026: Lucknow Super Giants enter the season under pressure after two disappointing campaigns. Despite playoff appearances in their first two years, they finished seventh last season despite changes in leadership and the support staff. Before this season, they made bold decisions during the mini auction, overhauling the squad and coaching staff.
The Rishabh Pant-led side entered the mini auction with a purse of Rs 22.95 crore and six slots remaining. They strengthened their bowling by signing Wanindu Hasaranga and Anrich Nortje, who were considered value buys. Their biggest investment was in Josh Inglis at Rs 8.6 crore, despite his limited availability.
LSG retained a strong core led by captain and wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, along with specialist batters Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh (all-rounder), Aiden Markram, and Ayush Badoni. They also traded for experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami and all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar, while trading out fast bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The franchise released players like middle-order batsman David Miller and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. A key change in the coaching setup was the appointment of Kane Williamson as a strategic advisor, replacing Zaheer Khan. At the same time, Carl Crowe will serve as the new bowling coach alongside head coach Justin Langer, Tom Moody (advisor), and Bharat Arun (assistant coach).

Strengths
Their biggest strength this season is the depth and experience the side has, both in captaincy and bowling. If one compares the performances of IPL 2025, this side looks formidable. Rishabh Pant will lead the team from the front throughout the season, unlike last year, when he was still adjusting to the new team.
Their fast-bowling attack is much stronger, with Mohammed Shami, Mayank Yadav, Anrich Nortje, and Mohsin Khan forming a dangerous quartet. Injuries to key players forced the team to rely on backups last season, but now they have ample frontline options. Their batting, led by Marsh, Markram, Pooran, and Pant, forms a solid top order that addresses last season's inconsistency. Hasaranga can also contribute in the lower order, providing balance after Ravi Bishnoi's release. Digvesh Rathi, a top bowler last year, aims to replicate his wicket-taking performances and will be a player to watch.
Weaknesses
Despite improvements, the team still lacks an experienced finisher—a gap left by David Miller's release. Josh Inglis, bought for Rs 8.6 crore, is not seen as a reliable finisher, which remains a major concern. The middle order also lacks experience, with Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad expected to play crucial knocks. Batting collapses after strong starts in IPL 2025 remain a concern.

With new players on the roster, several, like Nortje and Shami, are injury-prone. Pant, Marsh, and Mayank Yadav have also sustained injuries in recent years. Injuries disrupted their campaign last season and could do so again.
Opportunities
Under keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant's leadership, LSG will seek to rebound from consecutive disappointing years. With a set captain and revamped coaching staff, the team can leverage its player roles more effectively. Young Indian talents—Ayush Badoni (middle-order batter), Akshat Raghuvanshi (batsman), Mukul Choudhary (bowling all-rounder), and Naman Tiwari (fast bowler)—will aim to prove themselves in their defined roles.
Their bowling lineup can become their strength. On quick surfaces, they can field some of the most lethal fast bowlers in this tournament. Pant will also work on improving his captaincy skills. With Williamson and Moody as advisors, he will try to improve his decision-making skills.
Threats
This team has proved during the last two editions that a formidable side doesn't always get the desired results. If their first two matches don't go in their favour, then their confidence might also come down, as was evident during the last edition. Over-dependency on overseas players is another risk. Any player losing his form or having availability issues might affect their playing XI and momentum. Injuries remain a persistent threat given the track record of key players like Nortje, Shami, Pant, and Mayank Yadav, which could further disrupt team balance. Unfamiliarity within the squad due to numerous new signings could impact team chemistry early in the season. It should be noted that expectations rise when a franchise invests heavily in a player and makes changes to its coaching staff. If they again fail to qualify for the playoffs, then it would raise questions about their planning and could put both players and the coaching staff under intense pressure, possibly leading to further changes.
