IPL 2026: India's star batter Virat Kohli is considered one of the greatest T20I batters. Some critics point to his strike rate, while others fault his anchoring. However, when it comes to longevity, the sheer number of runs he has scored, and his adaptability over 15 years, he stands unmatchable.

He began his T20I career as a middle-order batter, then sealed his spot at No.3. He delivered brilliant performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru as an opener. He also fulfilled his dream of winning both the T20 World Cup and the IPL title.

When asked about the best opener in this format, RCB posed the question during a recent interaction ahead of the upcoming season. While playing a game of this or that, he had to pick between two choices each time. For example, he started by choosing Adam Gilchrist over Sunil Narine. The next comparison was then between Gilchrist and another player.

Eventually, the comparison narrowed to Chris Gayle versus Rohit Sharma, and Kohli selected his former RCB teammate.

It should be noted that, in the video, Kohli limited the comparison to T20Is. Rohit could not surpass Gayle as the T20I opener. However, in the 50-over format, Kohli might consider him the best. The same logic applies to Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli’s idol. That’s why he picked Virendar Sehwag over Tendulkar—Tendulkar hardly played the shortest format, while Sehwag did.
