IPL 2026: Mitchell Starc will miss the opening matches of IPL 2026, a significant setback for the Delhi Capitals, who had planned to build their campaign around him as the leader of their fast bowling attack.
According to Cricket Australia, Starc won't be available for the first few matches of IPL 2026, which begin next week, as his return to franchise duties will depend on how his return-to-play protocols unfold over the coming weeks. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, too, will be giving the first few matches a miss for their respective teams. Still, Starc's absence is quite different, given the role he was supposed to play for DC.
Why Starc’s delayed arrival matters for Delhi Capitals
This is quite huge because of what Starc can do for a T20 team, which is looking for clarity in high-pressure situations. He is one of the rare pacers who can turn the tide of the game with the new ball and also perform well during death overs. DC relied on him to lay the foundation of their campaign as their lead bowler.

Cricket Australia revealed that the workload of the veteran fast bowler is being closely monitored following a hectic schedule over the past year. It should be noted here that Starc had featured in all five matches of the Ashes Test series and had also played a few matches of the Big Bash League, where he had bowled more overs than in the longest format. This explains the decision, and that's why DC will be without their main bowler for their tournament opener.
Cummins and Hazlewood are in a similar situation to SRH and RCB, who will be playing their tournament opener without these Australian pacers. Cricket Australia also revealed that Starc's timeline will also depend on his progress for the next few weeks. DC won't have to wait for his arrival throughout the whole season, but it will definitely affect their start.
It should be noted that DC had roped in Starc for a whopping Rs 11.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. He had played in 11 matches last year, taking 14 wickets at a staggering economy rate of 10. But it's not just the stats that one analyzes to determine the effects of a bowler. Just his presence in the bowling attack will make a team's bowling lineup look lethal, and his ability to perform under pressure is why franchises break the bank for him. The Axar Patel-led side will try to have a flying start in his absence so that, when he returns, they can qualify for the playoffs.
