MI vs PBKS IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians star batter and India's T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has failed to perform consistently in the ongoing season. During their match against the Punjab Kings, he got out on the first ball, ducked in their backyard on Thursday.
Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed for a first-ball duck after he smashed the ball towards Arshdeep Singh during the second over, as the Punjab-based franchise won the toss and chose to bowl first. The fielder who was standing at short third man took Suryakumar's catch.
He once again had a forgetful outing, as he was supposed to spearhead MI's batting attack in Rohit Sharma's absence, who was ruled out of this match owing to a hamstring injury.

Suryakumar, who also had a disappointing run during the T20 World Cup, has scored 106 runs in five matches for the Mumbai-based franchise, crossing 20 runs just twice.
SLUMP IN FORM
The timing of the dip in his form is quite worrisome. According to a PTI report, the BCCI plans to adopt a performance-linked leadership model as it prepares for the LA28 Olympics. Although Suryakumar's captaincy skills are quite brilliant, as he helped the Indian team lift the 2026 T20 World Cup title, his own batting performances were quite concerning.
Even though team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has come out in his support till now, Suryakumar should perform consistently with the bat. Although he did bounce back to form earlier this year by smashing four fifties, his recent dip is quite concerning. In the 2026 T20 World Cup, he struggled to perform when the team needed him the most, scoring 18, 18, and 11, and was dismissed for a duck in the summit clash against the Mitchell Santner-led side. He also had a disappointing run last year, as his strike rate fell below 120, the opposite of what his old self was.
The Indian team selectors are also well aware that Suryakumar will turn till the LA28 Olympics.
The stats show two different pictures. Suryakumar, the captain, has one of the best win percentages in the history of the shortest format. After the T20 World Cup, his captaincy record stands at 40 wins in 52 matches, a win percentage of 80.76%. For a while, he also surpassed Rohit Sharma's win percentage of 79.33%, and that's how he became one of the most successful T20I captains.
In summary, while Suryakumar's captaincy credentials are strong, maintaining his place in a transitioning Indian team will depend on whether he regains his previous batting form. With India’s top order performing and emerging talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi poised for opportunities, Suryakumar needs to prove his consistency with the bat to secure his spot.
