India’s preparations for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka have been overshadowed by growing injury concerns. The series begins on August 15, but several key players are either unavailable or racing against time to regain fitness.
The Indian team started its three-day warm-up match against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI on Friday without captain Shubman Gill, who sat out after injuring his finger. While the injury is not believed to be serious, it has added to India’s long list of fitness worries.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, pacer Harshit Rana and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy have already been ruled out of the tour. There is also uncertainty over Washington Sundar’s availability for the second Test and Sai Sudharsan’s chances of featuring in the opening match.
Injuries Continue to Trouble India’s Plans
For years, India’s biggest strength was its large pool of talented cricketers. The team had enough depth to replace injured players without weakening the squad. That advantage is now being tested as injuries continue to pile up across formats.
Several players have suffered repeated fitness setbacks in recent seasons, forcing the selectors to regularly reshuffle squads. The situation has affected India’s balance in Test cricket, ODIs and T20Is.
At present, 13 players who are either part of India’s current setup or considered for future selection are undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Jasprit Bumrah Yet to Begin Full Cricket Training
Bumrah reached the Centre of Excellence after being ruled out of the Sri Lanka series with inflammation in his left knee. Doctors had earlier drained fluid from the joint and administered treatment before advising him to rest.
During his rehabilitation, Bumrah experienced discomfort while jogging and while performing single-leg exercises. As a result, the medical team decided that he was not ready for competitive cricket.
His recovery plan currently focuses on rebuilding strength and fitness before gradually increasing his bowling workload. No timeline has been fixed for his return.
Hardik Pandya Suffers Fresh Setback During Recovery
Hardik Pandya had made encouraging progress after recovering from a left quadriceps injury. He had resumed bowling at close to full intensity and was building up his weekly workload.
However, he recently complained of pain in his right calf. Medical examinations did not reveal any major damage, but the coaching staff temporarily stopped his running and bowling to avoid aggravating the issue.
After responding well to treatment, Hardik has resumed running. If everything goes according to plan, he is expected to restart his bowling programme from August 10 before gradually increasing his workload.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Progressing Well
Nitish Kumar Reddy continues to recover from a left quadriceps injury and has entered the cricket-specific training phase of his rehabilitation.
He recently bowled at around 60 to 70 per cent intensity, completing 16 overs during the week. Alongside bowling, he has been working on sprint training and strength exercises.
The medical staff is expected to increase both the intensity and volume of his bowling over the coming weeks if his recovery remains on track.
Sai Sudharsan Still Being Monitored
Sai Sudharsan has resumed batting and fielding after recovering from a stress reaction in his right leg.
He has already spent more than an hour batting in the nets and has returned to conditioning drills. However, he continues to experience occasional pain in the affected toe after training sessions.
The Centre of Excellence will closely monitor his response during two extended practice sessions before taking a final call. Another MRI scan is likely to determine whether he is ready to return to competitive cricket.
Harshit Rana Shows Positive Signs
Harshit Rana has made encouraging progress after suffering a right hamstring injury.
According to the medical team, he has responded well to rehabilitation, improved his physical conditioning and managed his body weight effectively. His current programme focuses on increasing strength, agility and overall fitness before he returns to competitive cricket.

India’s Fitness Challenge Continues
With several frontline players unavailable and others still recovering, India’s injury list remains one of the biggest concerns for the team management. While the Centre of Excellence continues to oversee the rehabilitation of injured players, their return will depend on meeting fitness benchmarks rather than fixed timelines.
As India prepare for another important Test series, getting key players back on the field has become just as important as preparing for the opposition.
