Darren Sammy Makes Desperate Appeal To Go Home, Decries 'Lack Of Update' After Being Stranded In India

T20 World Cup 2026: West Indies head coach Darren Sammy expressed his frustration on social media after the West Indies Cricket Team and support staff were left stranded in India after his team failed to qualify for the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026. Notably, Windies lost a last-over humdinger against hosts India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (1st March).

"I just wanna go home," Sammy posted on X, as he decried his situation for not being able to reach home due to ongoing escalating tensions in the Middle East region.

The closure of Dubai Airport and the broader shutdown of airspace in West Asia have significantly impacted international flight schedules, preventing the team from returning home as expected.

Sammy, after a few hours, put out another post on X asking for an update.

"At least an update, tell us something. Today tmw, next week. It’s been 5 days," Sammy posted.

Earlier, Cricket West Indies (CWI) had confirmed on Monday that the team's departure, following their exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, from India has been postponed due to international airspace restrictions in the Gulf Region.

In an official statement, CWI had said, "These restrictions are a direct result of the security threats posed by military action in the Gulf Region, which has impacted several international flight routes and required airlines to adjust scheduled services for safety reasons."

The board assured that the safety and well-being of the players, coaching staff, and officials remain the highest priority.

"CWI is working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), relevant governmental authorities, and airline partners to secure the earliest possible safe travel arrangements for the squad and support staff," the statement added.

The West Indies are two-time champions of the Men's T20 World Cup, having won the title in 2012 and 2016.
