Former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi has stirred controversy by claiming that a few teams may have used “black magic” in the past to try and win matches.

The whole issue started after a video from a game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium went viral. In the clip, a fan was seen doing a “lemon trick” just before Shivam Dube faced Sakib Hussain during a match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Lalit Modi on Black magic in IPL

Soon after, a letter started circulating online, claiming that CSK had complained about black magic being used in the match. At first, Lalit Modi reacted to the situation and even joked about it, but later he said the letter looked fake.

“Seems fake this time. But one team owner did indulge in this type of practice,” Lalit Modi wrote on X.

Even though he dismissed the current claim, Modi said such things may have happened earlier.

“I remember I posted some team owner doing this to the opposing team. By doing exactly this themselves in opposing team dressing room. I even alerted the opposing team owners about this way back in 2011 season, when it happened and I got an alert with concrete proof. I will reveal all these type of activities conducted by whom in the movie / TV series as decided by my team to disclose,” he added.

So far, there has been no official confirmation from the IPL or any franchise about the letter or the claims.

SRH defeated CSK by 10 runs

Talking about the match, CSK were chasing 195 and got off to a strong start, scoring 76 runs in the powerplay. But SRH came back well with tight bowling. CSK lost momentum in the middle overs, and despite a close finish, SRH managed to win the game by 10 runs.

Notably, SRH will now face Delhi Capitals (DC) at home on Tuesday. Meanwhile, five-time champions CSK will face Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.
