IND vs AFG: Ajit Agarkar, who chairs the selectors for the Indian national cricket team, refrained from delving deeply into Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or assessing the prospect of the youngster making his India debut. He highlighted their excitement for what Sooryavanshi brings and reassured them that he will seize his chance at the right time. Sooryavanshi has captured the attention of fans and experts alike, with numerous ex-cricketers rallying behind his inclusion in India's T20I team.

Earlier this month, the BCCI selected Sooryavanshi for the India A team for the series against Sri Lanka, scheduled for next month, and this decision has diminished his chances of traveling to Ireland for the two-match ODI series, regardless of reported selection. Following Gavaskar's comments, Sooryavanshi will navigate the same process, where he will eventually earn a maiden call-up for his India debut.

“We selected him for the India A team because he is young and immensely promising. The idea is to immerse these youngsters in exposure. Yashasvi Jaiswal already participates in the ODI set-up. Sooryavanshi has dazzled, but others have performed impressively too. We eagerly anticipate seeing him showcase his talent as he journeys with the A team,” Ajit Agarkar stated to reporters during the press conference.

Why the Sooryavanshi delay?

Sooryavanshi hasn’t faltered so far. After grabbing everyone’s attention during IPL 2025, where he smashed a record-breaking hundred, he triumphed everywhere he played. He scored hundreds in England, South Africa, and Australia and helped the team clinch the U-19 World Cup in his first attempt by delivering a match-winning knock of 175 runs during the summit clash. Michael Vaughan and Kris Srikanth are among the ex-cricketers eager to watch Sooryavanshi compete during the series against England later this year, even if it means not playing in the XI.

But it's easier said than done. The Indian cricket team has always followed a fixed system. The young Sooryavanshi, making his debut, would be quite unfair for the other players, who are waiting for their chance. After all, he is just 15 years old and could become the youngest player to make his international debut, even though Ravi Shastri is urging the BCCI to do the same; he might have to wait a little longer.
