- Medical emergencies allow unlimited EPF withdrawals for employees and their families.
- Children's education and wedding expenses permit limited PF advances
- Housing needs and special circumstances also qualify for EPF withdrawals.
The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) contributions not only secure employees' retirement but it provides financial assistance during any short of sudden uncertainty as well. Situations such as medical emergencies, job loss, children's higher education, marriage, or home purchases demand a decent amount of money. That is where a partial withdrawal from your PF account plays a crucial role.
Recently, the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) clarified that PF account holders can withdraw funds under five specific circumstances. However, the EPFO has set limits on the number of withdrawals allowed for a particular purpose.
PF Can Be Withdrawn In These 5 Situations
1. Medical Emergency and Illness
If an employee or a family member (spouse, child, or parent) needs money for medical treatment, an advance (illness PF advance withdrawal) can be withdrawn from the PF account. The best part is that there is no limit on withdrawals in case of a medical emergency.
2. Children's Education
You can also use your PF funds to meet your children's education expenses (after 10th grade). During your EPFO membership period, you can withdraw funds for education (Education PF Advance withdrawal) up to 10 times.
3. Special Circumstances
Under certain circumstances (such as natural disasters, company closures, etc., as notified by the Central Board of Trustees), PF advances can also be withdrawn. This limit is set at a maximum of two times per financial year.
4. Wedding Expenses
You can also withdraw funds from your account for your spouse's, son's, daughter's, or sibling's wedding expenses. This facility (Marriage PF Advance withdrawal) can be availed a maximum of 5 times during your entire service period.

5. Buying or Building a House
EPFO also allows advance withdrawals for housing-related expenses. Under this scheme, you can withdraw funds from your PF account for purchasing a new house/plot, building a house, repaying a home loan, or renovating your house (Renovation PF Advance withdrawal). You can withdraw funds for these housing-related expenses up to 5 times during your PF tenure.
What Is the Maximum 75% Withdrawal Rule?
According to the latest EPFO guidelines, if you have been an EPFO member for 12 months (i.e., one year), you can withdraw a maximum of 75 per cent of your total EPF balance as an advance. This withdrawal can be made for any of the valid reasons mentioned above.
