India’s creator economy is rapidly growing year over year, and the financial contribution by Google’s popular video-sharing platform, YouTube, to the nation’s GDP proves the thriving video creation landscape. YouTube, according to a report from Oxford Economics, contributed over Rs 18,000 crore to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 

According to the report, the number of YouTube channels in India generating six figures or more in revenue (INR) rose by over 30 per cent year-on-year. Furthermore, over 18,000 Indian channels have crossed the threshold of one million subscribers. 

A report by Oxford Economics revealed that 73% of creators who monetise content on YouTube consider the platform their primary source of income. Furthermore, it is estimated that by 2025, the video platform will have generated more than 960,000 full-time jobs in the country.

Independent Creators Are Creating Media Enterprises 

The digital creation sector in India is evolving to a point where independent content creators are gradually becoming established media companies, the report highlights, which is boosting employment and local economic activity in major cities and smaller towns.

In addition to direct income, creators who monetise their content have supported more than 300,000 apprentices in the past year. Creative hubs have emerged in cities outside major metropolitan areas such as Jaipur, Lucknow and Kochi, which are creating local demand for video editors, camera operators and scriptwriters.

How Local And Regional Language Pushing India’s Creator Economy

YouTube highlighted that hyperlocal and regional language content is gaining significant international popularity, with over 15% of viewing time for content produced by Indian channels coming from viewers outside the country.

Furthermore, 81% of media companies on the platform stated that YouTube has helped them reach a global audience.

Interestingly, the report indicated that Indian channels uploaded over 160 million hours of content last year.

YouTube and Government Collaboration

YouTube said it is working with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) to build national digital skills under the 'Create with AI' initiative. It has also partnered with the Ministry of Culture to preserve heritage and promote traditional folk and tribal music on the global stage.

On the product front, the company has implemented artificial intelligence-based production tools, including conversational AI editing for shorts and agentic channel management features in Ask Studio. The platform said it has introduced 'AI similarity detection' along with clear labels and disclosures for synthetic content to ensure digital authenticity.
