Jack Ma, one of the most celebrated entrepreneurs across the globe, turned 62 on September 10, 2026. Ma is a legendary business leader from China whose vision reshaped global commerce. Currently, he ranks 96th on Forbes' real-time billionaire list with an estimated net worth of $25.9 billion. Ma's journey from an average-earning person to monumental wealth is a tale of resilience, persistence and commitment to keep going even after failing again and again.
From Setbacks to an Empire: Alibaba
Before founding Alibaba Group—one of the largest e-commerce and technology conglomerates in the world—Jack Ma experienced repeated failures. He failed university entrance exams being rejected by dozens of employers; his path offers an inspiring masterclass in triumphing over adversity.
Ma's early academic journey was fraught with challenges. He failed several primary and middle school examinations. Later, he appeared for China’s rigorous National College Entrance Examination three times before securing admission to Hangzhou Normal University, where he graduated in 1988 with a degree in English.
Facing Endless Rejections
Completing graduation was an achievement for him, but it did not bring immediate relief. Ma applied for around 30 different positions and was rejected by all of them. In one famously symbolic instance, when KFC opened a branch in his city, 24 people applied for the job; 23 were hired, and Jack Ma did not get the job.
Discovers Power of the Internet In US
Jack Ma started working as an English teacher, earning a modest $12 a month. Later, Ma made a decision that changed his life forever. He took a trip to the United States in 1995. It was there that he encountered the internet for the first time—an epiphany that ignited his belief in the transformative potential of digital technology.
1999: The Birth of Alibaba
In 1999, inside a modest apartment in Hangzhou, Ma gathered 17 friends and former students. With a shared investment of approximately $60,000, they launched Alibaba as a business-to-business marketplace. Ma was not a tech person; however, his strategic foresight empowered small and medium enterprises across China to trade on a global scale.
Alibaba’s compelling vision quickly attracted high-profile backing, including a pivotal $25 million investment from SoftBank and Goldman Sachs. This capital influx fueled rapid diversification into consumer retail (Taobao, Tmall) and digital financial infrastructure (Alipay).

In September 2014, Alibaba cemented its legacy by completing a historic $21.8 billion Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange. The listing to the US market put Jack Ma onto the global stage as one of Asia's most prominent corporate leaders.
Philanthropy And Tech Innovation
Ma stepped down as CEO of Alibaba in 2013, and later he resigned as executive Chairman in 2019 as well. He redirected his focus toward philanthropy, education, and tech innovation. Following regulatory changes and the restructuring of Ant Group in late 2020, he maintained a low profile for several years. Today, he is gradually reappearing in public life, continuing to inspire entrepreneurs worldwide.
