Sujata Sharma, joint secretary in the ministry of petroleum, said that the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely affected in the past two months due to the war between Iran and the US. She further stated that the global price of crude oil, natural gas, and LPG has increased significantly in the past few weeks, affecting the imports.

However, the officials have maintained that there was no shortage of petrol and diesel, advising the consumers to avoid panic buying. The prices of petrol and diesel have remained unchanged largely in the past few years; however, a reduction of Rs 2 was announced just before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Along with affecting the daily users, the recent hikes are likely to lead to a surge in the transportation costs. The prices of vegetables, cooking oil, and other daily-use products are likely to increase in the upcoming weeks due to an increased transportation cost.
